I-70 Vail Pass Chain Station Evaluation and Improvements

i-70-vail-chain-stations-file1-5As part of our CDOT Region 3,5 Traffic NPS contract, Stolfus & Associates assisted CDOT in evaluation of the existing conditions and operations of the I-70 chain stations for Vail Pass.  With a primary focus on implementing capital improvements over time, the study identified observed deficiencies, made recommendations for physical modifications to existing facilities or changes in operational logistics to improve functional characteristics, and produced an Implementation Plan for improvements.

Funded by CDOT RAMP (Responsible Acceleration of Maintenance and Partnerships) operations funds, in June 2014, Stolfus began leading a multi-discipline team to design the extension of the Mile Post 178 chain station approximately 1500 feet to the west and upgrade the chain station lighting to current standards.

Residing within the I-70 Mountain Corridor, the plan follows the requirements of the I-70 Mountain Corridor Context Sensitive Solutions (CSS) process.  The public process includes coordination with the Vail Town Council and a public open house meeting.

Construction was completed in late 2016.
